Fresh Grabs

Another successful carboot this morning, with a few other purchases thrown in.

Hank Mobley - The Jazz Message No. 2 (Savoy/London Records, 1957 First UK Pressing)
Michael Gibbs - Tanglewood 63 (Deram, 1971 First Pressing)
David Axelrod - Heavy Axe (Fantasy, 2020 Vinyl Me Please Exclusive Pressing)
Jack DeJohnette - Sorcery (Prestige, 2020 Vinyl Me Please Exclusive Pressing)

I have been after Michael Gibbs - Tanglewood 63 for ages now and finally came across this super clean copy that sounds like a dream. The Hank Mobley is a real rarity and while the sleeve is pretty beat, the vinyl is immaculate. I cant believe how clean! Plus I had store credit and decided to get the last 2 in the set of Jazz Dispensary/VMP releases.

Billy Harper Quintet - Antibes '75 (Sam Records, 2021 Limited First Pressing)
Union Records Tote
Poems From Poetry and Jazz in Concert by Jeremy Robson
Mahavishnu Orchestra - Apocalypse (CBS, 1974 First Pressing)
Shelly Manne & His Friends - Modern Jazz Performances Of Songs From My Fair Lady (Contemporary, 1963 UK Pressing)
Bennie Green, J.J. Johnson With Sonny Stitt - Modern Jazz Trombones Volume Two (Prestige, 1951 First 10" Pressing)

The records on the right are the carboot finds, with the best being the Prestige 10". They each cost me 50p so I couldn't say no to them! I was at my local shop earlier in the week and the owner had kindly set aside the Billy Harper. He ended up throwing in the tote bag as well which was cool. Finally the Poems From Poetry and Jazz in Concert book, which is full of info, poems and photos from the series of concerts that were released as a 2 part LP set (Discogs link here for those interested). The jazz is fantastic and includes Michael Garrick, Joe Harriott and Shake Keane. The book is full of photos from the event which is fantastic.

One of the local shops has a 25% off all vinyl re-opening offer this week (on Monday non-essential retail in Scotland was allowed to open for the first time this year) so I picked up a copy of Stars of the Lid's 'And Their Refinement of the Decline' they've had in for a couple of years that was otherwise a bit pricy for me and a copy of the recent Matador reissue of Pavement's 'Crooked Rain Crooked Rain' (Pavement were always handled by other labels in the UK until 2020).

That's the longest I've gone without setting foot in a record shop since I was 11.

Trying to find more jazz in my local stores.

Freddie Hubbard — Here to Stay
Herbie Nichols — The Third World
The Horace Silver Quintet & Trio — Blowin’ The Blues Away

Never heard of Herbie Nichols before (gasp) and bought on a whim (I’ve loved the re-issue series from BN so far). I’m listening right now and it’s magical.

April Acquisitions

Ambient/Avant Garde pickups:

Tony Conrad with Faust - Outside the Dream Syndicate
Alvin Curran - Canti E Vedute Del Giardino Magnetico
Sarah Davachi - Pale Bloom
Raul Lovisoni / Francesco Messina - Prati Bagnati Del Monte Analogo

20210501_121436.jpg

All of these (in addition to Iceland in the next photo) were recommended from @dropsonde in the Superior Viaduct sale held just over a month ago. All are avant garde titles that offer incredible sonic variation. I can't say which one I like the most...they are all so brilliant. What has come from this undoubtedly is that I am now a Sarah Davachi follower, after having listened to a number of her releases. Seeing that she has connections to Julia Holter only makes me feel stronger about owning a few of her stunningly meditative records.

Richard Pinhas - Iceland
Midori Takada - Through the Looking Glass

20210501_121707.jpg

How can I best describe Through the Looking Glass, an ambient/new age treasure from Japan? Violently beguiling, I would say. So serene in its introductory moments, but the palpable tension becomes apparent in the gargantuan closing cut "Catastrophe Σ."

Jazz pickups:

Ornette Coleman - The Shape of Jazz to Come [2xLP 45RPM]
Alice Coltrane - A Monastic Trio

20210501_121925.jpg

The 2xLP 45RPM reissue of the Coleman classic is part of a generous gift from an N&G member here. Stunning.
Blind buy on this Alice Coltrane reissue. Her brand of jazz is among the more engaging in the genre for my tastes as of late.

Current Year pickup:

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - G_d's Pee AT WORLD'S END!

20210501_122009.jpg

Excited to see them next year. Interesting choice to use an LP + 10" for packaging

Miscellaneous pickups:

Broadcast - The Noise Made by People
The Cure - Disintegration
Dead Can Dance - Anastasis
Fugazi - Red Medicine

20210501_122153.jpg

Nabbing this Broadcast reissue completes the studio full-length discography for me.
This reissue of Disintegration is the recent 2020 MPO repress. Pretty clean and noiseless from sampling the first side.
Just finished playing this 2016 repress of Anastasis and my goodness...the instrument separation and soundstage is very impressive. Did not expect this to sound as great as it does!!!
Red Medicine is part 2 of the gift from the same N&G member. Will be getting to this one soon!

Harmonia - Musik Von Harmonia
Portishead - Portishead

20210501_122805.jpg

Beyond thrilled to find a copy of this particular Harmonia reissue in the wild. I was only able to find copies that had a "digitally remastered" sticker on them for months, but casually came across the Lilith reissue that is remastered from the analog tapes and also includes a bonus CD, just like the Cluster reissues I also own. Very very pleased!
Lastly, Portishead's sophomore record is the third and final part of the same gift mentioned earlier. Thank you so so much!

Shipped out 5 boxes of records today, probably 10-15 records in all.

Picked up Eno’s Nerve Net at the post office (Amoeba online).

Grabbed Clutch s/t and Orange Sunset at a local shop (Young Ones in PA). Clutch is black vinyl on MOV, Orange Sunset is splatter from Black Friday RSD, used with “a few pops on track 2.”
