I should be getting my copy tomorrow and I'm pretty excited for it. Seems like you either love or hate it. I don't see the hate behind it, it's different than any blues album in my collection but that's not a bad thing.

this is 100% how I felt about it when i streamed it. "this is a bar band that wandered into a studio and no one hated them enough to kick them out and magically their bullshit record got pressed"
actually, the other thing i thought of is...did you know that bruce willis recorded an album in the 80s? i've never actually heard the album, but i've seen the cover, The Return of Bruno (album) - Wikipedia
anyway. if you played musselmeh and told me it was "return of bruno", i would 100% believe you and in fact probably throw in a "hey, that's surprisingly not as bad as it could be"
I definitely didn’t hate it, it just didn’t leave an impression on me the multiple times I streamed it. I was having to force myself to pay attention because my mind kept wandering and losing interest.
I imagine it will stay in stock for a while, so I may change my mind down the road and pick it up. I’m sure the pressing is going to sound great and will probably elevate it.

I was curious, what classics picks did people like the best over the last 12 months or so?
Otis Redding was fantastic, but after that I found myself disappointed by Albert King and McCoy Tyner (and skipping Erroll Garner and The Bar-Keys entirely), so I took a break from this sub around the time of the price increase. I did grab Donny Hathaway at some point and liked it.
Is there anything else that others have been particularly impressed by? I'm wondering about The Hawk Flies High or Dreams. I know they are sold out, just wondering about streaming or eventual re-presses.

Dreams is incredible.
Definitely one of my favourites since the start of my subscription.

Echoing that Dreams is great and probably the best Classics release of 2020 (which is some strong competition as I also really liked Herbie, Erroll, and Donny). I think it's a matter of if, not when it gets repressed.
I expect The Hawk Flies High to return to swaps either next month or the month after. I don't think it really sold out; they just didn't want to send out any more copies with the misprinted cover so they pulled the remaining inventory until it could be changed out.
There's a preorder for a white LITA pressing, not sure how it compares to the VMP.

Dreams is both my favourite VMP release by a mile and easily the most played record on our shelf. Definitely worth picking up whenever they repress it.

Otis Redding, Donny Hathaway, Coleman Hawkins (I think this gets the most spins out of them all), Sonny Rollins, Gabor Szabo, McCoy Tyner, and Aretha all contributed to a KILLER classics year for me frankly. They were on fire.

Otis Redding, Albert King were my clear top 2 followed by Dreams, then in no order Donny Hathaway and Sonny Rollins. Dreams really is great. The Hawk Flies High is wonderful as well, but the recording quality I feel isn't as good as some stuff that was being put on in the late 50s.
