Vinyl Me Please Anthology

Im thinking about it now. Is it minotaurs or should it be singular. My Greek mythology is shakey as shit but there were Gorgans (plural) but I can only recall a single minotaur - and that poor dude ended up meeting a fairly poor fate.

But you need something a bit more substantial if you're going to be popping out all those 45s. Otherwise magicland'll just degenerate in to a uber chafed elven anus bloodbath. And that'll just lead to more surface noise
I do believe there was only one Minotaur.

Elven Anus Bloodbath - there's a band name for you. Playing the 2021 Renaissance Fair circuit, dazzling the world with their hurdy gurdy djent chops.

When you take the kiddies to the toilets at the Renaissance Fair and there's claret spattered across the floors and walls of the cubicle... you know Elven Anal Bloodbath must be topping the bill that night

Do ya'll call a bathroom stall a "cubicle"? Because, if so, that just made office life much more depressing (and possibly accurate).

I like that these conversations happen when they do. It's just before noon where I am. What? ~0900 in the UK and night time(?) in Australia. I like that anyone in the U.S. who catches up in the morning will see posts about bleeding elf rectums and office culture and wonder who is minding the store overnight.

6:45pm over here in Australia - In bed on my laptop, listening to Herbie Hancock's Crossings! 😊

Baby Monster is also looking very forward to falling asleep and waking up to see what the VMP store drops are at 2:00am!:devilish:😵

speaking of colorful band names, I just searched on the discogs app for when the pawn but I only typed “when the” and the second result that popped up was for a band called “when the semen hits the sand,” and they don’t appear to have any releases on discogs, or even a band photo, so I’m very confused by it all.

Where as I've 6 BN80s all flat. There is more movement in my copies of Chant and The Cooker than all of them combined. I've 5 of the Abbey Road Stones albums, Dusty In Memphis, Scott 4 and Solid Air - all flat. If you're getting consistently warped records and its a pressing issue then by the law of averages at least one of the 14 albums I've had from those series/ plants should be warped too. But they aren't.

The internet is full of forums talking about warps, off centre presses and surface noise on QRP recordings. It isn't the impeccable haven of perfection full of pixies, elves and Minotaurs shitting out great times and perfectly pressed records that everyone make it out to be. If you've a product that is formed by heat and subsequently further impacted by heat it's going to be susceptible to getting fucked with... irregardless of where it comes from.
My experience as well. I can't say I have had to return more than 3 or 4 out of thousands for a significant warp.
I believe distance and climate are the culprits.
Sitting in a hot mail truck all day will do it, and if there are multiple steps along the way, risk increases.
I bet people in Norway rarely have a problem.
all my BN80 are perfect. Optimal is a great plant.

That is why I stopped order from Amazon UK and absolutely will not order from Europe unless I have no choice. My warp rate on records from Europe is something like 90% and I blame the Trans-Atlantic journey for that.

I have been listening to the XFM tapes on loop for around 5-years solid now (literally listen to at least 2-3 episodes everyday at work and there was a hilarious episode where Ricky and Steve try to come up with the best heavy metal band names. Some of the highlights were Humanity Manatee, Deathlyhem, Brain Hammer.....

I am starting to struggle with the idea of cancelling the Herbie box order. I realized that I already have Takin' Off (and Inventions & Dimensions) BN80/KPG pressings and, honestly, they sound great, and were very affordable. It seems like I could add a handful of carefully-chosen later titles and be pretty happy. Is there anything specific to the Anthology box that I won't be able to get elsewhere/later? And, if so, is that unobtainium likely to be that important to someone who didn't even remember he already had two Hancock albums in the stacks?

I would say the only BIG get is Maiden Vogaye, which hasn't had a widely available quality reissue in a while. I believe 1+1 is a first time on vinyl, but it is far from his most essential or interesting album. I'd say you can get a pretty solid Herbie fix elsewhere, maybe even scoring a Japanese pressing of Maiden Voyage

I'm in the same predicament.

Maiden Voyage - All the audiophile reissues (Analogue Productions, Music Matter) are OOP and super expensive. One would think this will get another high end reissue at some point, but who know when.

Piano - First vinyl reissue. This album is the hidden jewel in this set.

Live Under the Sky - First Vinyl reissue. Great live set from VSOP.

1+1 - First time on vinyl. Non-essential.

@Mather - I spun the MOV Thrust today, and around three days ago and can recommend it! I did a good comparison though to make sure I could recommend the pressing! I recalled you saying you think the MOV Miles Davis Live / Evil pressing sounds great, and as I had that too, I wanted to compare it to the MOV thrust and the MOV pressings of Still Bill and +judgments, which I assume you have! I know you have Crossings too, so listened to that a few times as well, so I can compare!

I like the remaster MOV did for Thrust - it’s got great separation and sounds clean, even though it lacks a bit of dynamics and sounds a tiny bit digital! It sounds great loud and overall it’s clean, fun and you can hear the link below that the separation is great. The maracas for example really sound like they are being played in the room!

The Miles Davis’ Love / Evil MOV pressing does sound very good, and I think sounds just as good, if not, a little bit better than the Speakers Corner pressing for Man-Child! The Live / Evil MOV pressing is really dynamic, has great separation and is loud! The pressing sounds a bit bright/hot, but in a good way - the saxophone sounds killer on that pressing! The Speakers Corner pressing for Crossings is a tiny bit better than the MOV pressing for Live / Evil: which shows how strong that Miles Davis MOV pressing is!

The Miles Davis Kind Of Blue MOV pressing is absolutely superb too! I think I like it just as much as the MoFi Kind of Blue, if not, a little bit more as the remaster sounds extraordinary!

The MOV Still Bill and +Justments both sounds good and is on the same level as Thrust. They all sound clean, clear and sound good loud but lack a bit of dynamics, just like you’ve mentioned with a lot of MOV pressings! If you like the MOV pressing for Still Bill, which I do, then get Thrust. The Speakers Corner for Bill Withers’ Just As I Am is better than the MOV pressings for Still Bill and +justments and better than the Speakers Corner pressing of Man-Child! The Speakers Corner pressing for Just As I Am is very much on the same level as the Speakers Corner pressing for Crossings; both sound excellent, clear and really jump out of the speakers; you can really feel the instrumentation on those pressings!

Here is a picture below of how I listened to the pressings and compared, so I could get a good overview of how strong the pressing for Thrust really is;

The Analogue Productions pressing for Head Hunters was better than Just As I Am and Crossings. I gave that a listen back to back with Thrust too, just as they are both fusion Herbie Hancock albums!

Here are some videos so you can hear it all @Mather and see:

Thrust:
Thrust #2:
Man-Child:
Head Hunters:
Live / Evil:

I would give the MOV Thrust (and MOV Still Bill & +justments) pressing a 7.5/10,

I would give the Speakers Corner pressing for Man-Child an 8.5/10

The Speakers Corner pressing for Crossings and Just As I Am a 9.3/10

The Miles Davis MOV pressing for Live / Evil a 9/10

Finally, AP pressing Head Hunters a 10/10
