Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums of All Time

indecisive joeeee

Station to Station is your fave Bowie too? I knew there was a reason I liked you 😉

There’s just so much good music out there and that’s leaving off things that are special to me because of time/place/experience and hundreds more things. I think the last time I attempted a list I put the White Album on top but in some respects I also accept that these lists are an exercise in futility.

And yeah station to station is one of my three fav Bowie albums alongside hunky dory and low. It’s probably my fav right now but it’s a fluid situation.

It’s not my bag but I agree with what you say. It was definitely one of the albums of the 2010s as judged at the end of that decade. What I’m trying to say is that all time lists allow a larger perspective, to separate what, with hindsight, defined an era rather than what appears to be defining it now. I think an album needs 15, probably 20, years marinading in the subconscious before you can definitively say that.
Yeah I can definitely see what your saying with the criteria for sure. Certain albums might elevate above those conditions for me but they really gotta be extraordinary examples and this one album is the only hiphop album in the last 10 years I am willing to go out on a limb for and say yes it deserves to be held in different esteem to anything else and that criteria

I would assume that was on the list already, yes? Kid A is definitely the critics album, that or OKC, I wouldn't be shocked to see them on lists like this

Yeah OK Computer is always near the top. I kinda think it’s posing to pick Kid A above it too. Kid A is important because of its daring and the change of sound and it has some epic songs but it also has all too apparent flaws. Ok Computer doesn’t so much.

Yeah, any time I've ever tried to make a list of my top ten all time favorites or something like that I take another look at it the next day and think "no that's not right." So it's definitely a difficult thing to do, especially since you're always hearing new stuff

Its a bad list by a bad publication
For the record while I'm arguing a point for TPAB here I frigging hate lists they are all bullshit anyway. Music is subjective and there is no right/wrong in any ones choices. Who is to say Rolling Stone are the end all be all of lists. I'd use it as a guide to finding new music I haven't heard yet personally at best

I actually love music lists, next to actually listening to music its my favorite music adjacent activity. I just think that any list put out by a joke publication should be considered a joke, and RS has been a joke since I was a kid.

Yeah, I love a lot of Kid A but as an entire project there's things about it that don't work for me (Treefingers) which is why it wouldn't place super high on my personal list. But I acknowledge it's a very important album

I adore it but Kid A and Treefingers are weak for me and that’s 20% of the album tracks. It comes up high on a Radiohead list but not on an all time one.

I enjoy doing year-end lists, it just feels like a nice way to wrap up the year and reflect on all the stuff that came out. but again, my interest in seeing the lists other people make doesn't extend to seeing what all the publications rank as their AOTY. i'm infinitely more interested in seeing individual people's choices

Its perfect. Even some 20 years later it still sounds progressive and futuristic. I still remember my buddy and I taking acid and synching up Kid 17 due to some throwaway Thom Yorke joke.

I'm one of the weirdos that prefers Amnesiac as a whole, but the best of Kid A is near untouchable, I can see why it has the reputation that it has and when it comes to RH, any ranking I could do would be very arbitrary since I unabashedly love pretty much all their albums

If I had to go with my absolute favorite, it's shifted a bit through the years, but I think this little number takes the cake...

That 2017 pressing also sounds so much better than the original pressing, even though the original pressing is 45RPM and the 2017 pressing is 33RPM! 👍

I love this album so much too! I’m so happy to see that it’s your favourite album! It’s a masterpiece for sure! 💎❤️

A younger version of myself used the previous Top 500 list to find lots and lots of good music that I would not have found otherwise. Do I take the list seriously? Hell no. But, is the music on those lists good? Sure is. So, as dumb as something like this is, I like that it exists. And I like that they've updated it with both good and bad music. Good - because someone out there is going to use this list to find something new. Bad - because arguing about music is the best thing in life next to listening to music.

Yes!

For me, lists like this work well as orientation.

Never as indoctrination.

This is all very true. Anytime someone is discovering new music that's always a good thing, I just take issue with the gatekeeper in this instance. Their list birthed this thread which got me to listen to Idioteque this morning, so thats a net positive in my life.

Haha!! I was so happy to see it on the list this time as well as D’Angelo’s other 2 albums. It feels great! 🙌🏾
Yeah, and Baduizm and Voodoo, which are both organic, soothing, seductive neo-soul classics both ranked in the top #100!!! 😍

And Destiny’s Child Writing’s On The Wall even made the list! Like whaaaaaat!?! So good! 😇

Lauryn Hill ranking at #10 takes the cake though! If there’s one album I love the most, it’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill! ❤️
