What's Spinning

It's raining, fall is here and cycling to the office was not an option today. I have no teaching, there's a bus strike and the metro will be too packed covid-wise.

I stay at home! I brewed a pot of coffee and decided to have a breather before doing some writing...

As Fleet Foxes releases a new album yesterday (it does sound like a gorgeous one!) I wanted to have a re-listen to this one. It's been too long since last time I put it on. It really is a fantastic album, in my opinion much better than the debut. It's a great record, wonderfully mastered and the pressing is top shelf!

My collection #942-943

Otis Redding & Carla Thomas - King & Queen
Bill Withers - Making Music

As @espendo says it's cold, wet and miserable here so I need some warming up. Two of my favourite soul artists should do the trick. The Otis and Carla is fun, but the Bill Withers is seriously funky. Not sure why this isn't recognised as one of his best albums as it's really fantastic.

My collection #944-945

Jay-Z - Unplugged
Rymden - Space Sailors

Really love this live performance by Jay and the Roots, plus great new piano trio from what is basically EST but with Bugge Wesseltoft replacing Esbjorn Svensson. Some nice tunes and even some synths to show it's not quite EST. (Clip is of the quietest track, but maybe the best one)

Was that Unplugged ever pressed officially? How does that version you have sound?

No, it's a bootleg. I thought before it sounded good. But today it was a bit crackly in parts. So it's down for a vacuum. I wouldn't rush to get it - I suspect it's dubbed from CD...

Holy grail vinyl record finally at home after a trek from Germany. I love this album so much, it's hard to put into words. It has been with me through all kinds of life moments and musically it's just amazing on so many counts.

This is the original and only vinyl pressing. It badly needs to be reissued but according to chief llama Sean O'Hagan there are licensing issues with, I think UMC who owns the rights. The band badly wants the whole early catalogue out but cannot do anything about it. A shame as this one would deserve a much broader audience, also now in the vinyl renaissance era!
