What's Spinning

Gestu de Dakar - Diabar

Syllart is one of Senegal's main and most storied record labels. I don't know the full story but they've suddenly started putting out reissues. The big one with Orchestre Baobab is coming next month but this by Gestu de Dakar, who I hadn't heard of before, is amazing as well. It's got that typically hypnotic, almost Islamic, feel to the vocals and intoxicating music.

Mid-Air Thief ‘Crumbling’. Limited 150 with flexi-disk. The good - includes color insert with lyrics. The bad - I don’t read Korean. Interesting spin.
Just checked and according to whoever made the listing for my version on discogs, those flexis were randomly inserted into 100 across all Topshelf variants. If true, I guess we both got lucky!

I thought it was the 1st 100 orders but I can’t find any details on my order or screen saves to confirm. Always great to collect a few extras.

NOW SPINNING: Her's - Invitation To Her's

This one means a lot to me. For anyone who doesn't know, read this article:

I discovered Her's last year, and have been obsessed since. Highly recommended for fans of Julian Casablancas.

RIP, Her's.

John Coltrane & Lee Morgan ‎– The Best Of Birdland: Volume 1. (Roulette, 1963 First Stereo Pressing)

Very interesting one this. Its 2 separate sessions (A-side is Coltrane and B-side is Morgan) which were NOT recorded at Birdland. Roulette Records was founded by music mogul Morris Levy, who also owned the Birdland club. He partook in some pretty shady business (like claiming the rights to any song performed at Birdland without the musicians knowing), but he also used the club to approach musicians to record for his label, which is what happened here.
