The Blue Note Thread

I feel like every decade there has been a new reissue series of the classic Blue Note titles. I have to imagine that audiophile reissues on standard black aren’t too far off. MMJ will continue with their SRX vinyl and we will get regular vinyl. Possibly deluxe gatefolds again, but rather standard BN80 issues to replace the BN75 ones.
I already got most of the big ones that I really wanted before the bullshit, so mostly it just upsets me that others can't. I was planning on getting more, and maybe would have changed my mind about some others, but they made it very easy to just stop.

I think the ones I don't have that I remember being next on my list circa 2016/17 were:

Ready For Freddie
The Golden 8
Search For The New Land
Song For My Father
Wahoo
Speak No Evil
Maiden Voyage

I had a hard time pulling the trigger on Somethin' Else, True Blue, and Out To Lunch but probably would have picked them up eventually expecting to love them more one day.

I would have bought all these and more by now if they hadn't tried to price gouge and lied about why they pulled distribution, so it is hard for me to imagine it being a sound business decision on their part. Glad they are helping me save money because I can't afford it right now anyway. If any of these come out on BN80 AAA I will probably buy them in a heartbeat.

They're a crap company and IMO represent some of the worst parts about current vinyl collecting, which is hypocritical of a company called "Music Matters". I got in debate with John dark, who helps manage MMJ about why they've inflated prices so much over the years and based on quantity and this was the cringe-worthy answer he gave me.

Makes me want to buy from MM even less now...this was the real reason why they jacked up every record's price: "we saw other people making more money off it, so we want more of that piece of the pie. fuck our customers! they buy it anyway."

The funny thing is for some of the more popular titles, if you bide your time you will find them on eBay for a bit cheaper (but you save on postage). I picked up a Kenny Dorham SRX for for 10 bucks less and it was unopened.

I have never purchased anything through MM directly and never paid more than the current prices on their site. Mostly gotten them on eBay or reverb and got the occasional on discogs.

It seems to me that BN could easily sell a couple thousand of these at $35-$40 each, right?
I would only consider buying 2-4 MMJ at a $50-$60 price, but at $35-$40 I would buy at least 10 of them. I don't know if their license limits the amount of copies they can press, but this false scarcity and ridiculous prices seems like an absurd business decision to me. They could be selling SO MUCH MORE if they just stopped the bullshit.

Well I’m a sucker and bought blue train. But as stated earlier it’s my favorite record of all time. Period. I have a Japanese 100% pure of Blue Train. All I need now is an early pressing. And I’m set. But feel free to poke fun.
I have the Classic Records press of it otherwise I would have gone for that one. I try not to double dip. MM just makes me mad with their pricing so I have shied away from them. Can’t argue with the quality of their pressings and if it’s your favorite record, I think it’s 100% worth going for it. Enjoy!

That and Moanin’ are my top 2 wants when it comes to jazz records (let’s throw Sidewinder in there) and I think it’s great you bought it. Trust me, I’m *thisclose* to doing the same.

I think their pricing and their justification for that pricing is bullshit. I think MMJ is an extremely shady business with zero regard for its customers and is emblematic of everything wrong with vinyl right now. I can't can't help but notice the connection between MMJ and AudioQuest, a company that sells cables and cable risers (hilariously).

But I don't blame anyone for buying and I still might buy Midnight Blue and Speak No Evil. And New Land if that's still around when I pull the trigger on those other two. That's the thing, even though they are shady, they do have a real product and it's really nice.

Agreed all around. I really don’t want to support them at all, that conversation really disgusted me, but am going to be super tempted in April to grab Somethin Else and Speak No Evil.
It really sucks that these classics are pretty much exclusively in their hands.
