Pre-Order Thread

She probably doesn't have much exposure outside of Atlantic Canada, but Jennah Barry is a real treasure here and her new album has been a long time coming and is something I am greatly looking forward to. There are a few tracks you can check out on the Bandcamp page.

Holiday, by Jennah Barry
A couple guys I used to live with went to high school with her. I've only really heard her on a really fantastic Christmas jazz album by the Woodhouse, who I think are also originally from Nova Scotia. I'll check this out.

Yeah, the Woodhouse album was nice. She also had a live Christmas album with The Modern Grass. Christmas was a bit of a thing with her for a while I guess.

The new one is titled Holiday because she's taken such a long break from new music though, not because it's another Christmas recording.

Her first album, Young Men, was really great. It never made it to vinyl unfortunately, but maybe if the new one makes an impact it'll come some day. She's probably pretty sick of it at this point though, given how long she played those songs.

Nothing physical yet... only digital of ISWYD but El-P teasing releases of solo catalog via Fat Possum in 2020.

It’ll be nice to give OGs a break from spinning.

Good news! Hopefully Funcrusher Plus sometime too.

Flaming Lips w/ Deap Vally
DEAP LIPS

Blue Vinyl /500 with signed print

Very excited for this. Deap Vally is criminally underrated. Came out to $45 shipped to the U.S.

It doesn't look like the pressing is limited to 500, though, just the signed prints.

That really is the best description I’ve heard. However, I have extreme fatigue of the whole schtick so I think he has to be on radar-block for awhile until I can come back and listen unbiased.

Really? I think his might end up being my top album of 2019. I also don't really see it as that much of a schtick, more a commentary on access to country music for LGBTQ+ artists. Which it may very well not be, but thinking of it in that way makes me not mind the mask as much.

I don’t even think of it as a “schtick”, like those of you who have said it, what do you mean by that?

He plays straight forward folk-country music(I don’t get the morrissey comparison at all). When he does interviews, he’s friendly and open about his music and his experiences in music. He’s smart and affable. Is his face partially covered? Sure, but so was SIA’s for years, and I never heard anyone complain about her having a “schtick”.

Sorry, I did refer to it as a schtick/gimmick but I guess I was trying to say it was more my jaded hang up than anything he did. Once you’ve accepted the premise of the performer/art it all works well. I mean Daft Punk are robots, Kiss paint their faces, Father John Misty is a pretentious ass, and David Bowie was an alien. I have no issues with any of these things. I am just unfortunately inherently skeptical of this type of presentation as my initial (and unfair) take is these type of thing are used to distract from the actual music (when in actuality they, in many cases, add to the performance) but once it clicks with me I am fully on board. But yeah, that’s this is my prejudices, nothing they did.

The Morrissey reference was strictly based on his music/voice which I feel sometimes drifts into a Morrissey-eque timbre.

Like you said, He seems like great guy. I just recently watched his What’s In my bag feature where he seemed super affable and down to earth. While making some very thoughtful selections.

Trying to decide if I need this or not...I do love me some Courtney Barnett...and it's $30 shipped to the US from her bandcamp...
FOMO will have me caving soon if it doesn’t show up in US store. FWIW this is her US site but no preorder yet on MTV vinyl.

Edit: I just got an bulk email from her advertising new album. It goes to this link: https://courtneybarnett.merchtable.com/?utm_source=Courtney Barnett Mailing List&utm_campaign=01e5dfd91d-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2_10_2018_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_86e2e2dee0-01e5dfd91d-1212422961&mc_cid=01e5dfd91d&mc_eid=898a61b622

Still doesn’t show MTV but makes me think it’s going to show up in the US and EU stores ASAP. Maybe.

Edit 2: Now you can do a follow thru link that include the CD and Digital DL versions. No vinyl buy link at this moment yet.

My buddy Morgan interviewed him at THING. It’s a good time.
