Vinyl Me Please Rap & Hip Hop

Lauryn Hill is not included as I see it more as an R&B/Neo-Soul album. However, a good bunch of the album does contain rapping in it! If I was to include Lauryn Hill, it would be ranked #7 in this list. The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill is an absolute masterpiece!

Plus your #31 has great contributions from a female emcee. Ladybug was pretty good on the DP albums, although her solo stuff is not really good.

Yeah, Ladybug Mecca was a great MC! Although I wouldn’t include her as one of the better rappers of the 90’s, her spoken-word rapping flow was really unique. Blowout Comb is an essential Jazz-Rap record in my opinion, which is why it makes the list.

The Fugees’ The Score however is ranked in the top 10 because the three MC’s on there really bought out the best in each other. The chemistry on The Score is just unbeatable! The three - Pras, Wyclef & Lauryn - were like battling each other out, and sometimes Pras would take it home like he does on Fu-Gee-La or Lauryn Hill would murder it on tracks like Family Business etc. Lauryn Hill really stood out and is in my opinion, a top 10 MC of the 90’s.

Agreed, The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill is definitely worthy of a top #5 position. But it wasn’t so much the hip-hop that made it stand out. It was Lauryn Hill’s honest, vulnerable storytelling through her singing and the amazing production that really made the album a winner. Still, tracks like Lost Ones, Final Hour & Doo Woop (That Thing) are incredible hip-hop songs! 👌

Agree with your assessment of Ladybug Mecca vs Lauryn. IMO none of the rappers in DP, as good as they were would really hold up outside of their own little universe of beats and production, which really make the albums (and continue to make Shabazz Palaces work for Ish). Your top albums list is pretty straight laced hip-hop so I would respect that you don't classify Miseducation as such.

I would say I do see it placed on a lot of lists and I think it is somewhat fluid to place it in genre to genre. I'm pretty anti-genre since the whole concept of music genre was an early marketing construct that was essentially designed to reinforce segregation... R&B in particular is one of the stillest and broadest genres I know of, and black female artists seems to get disproportionately saddled with that label. If any hip-hop list is going to throw on something like Donuts that has no rapping or any post T-pain autotune shit on there I think they are forced to reckon with Lauryn too haha. I'd classify it as a HH album but it would be an odd duck amongst your list.

mmmmmm like I love J Dilla’s “Donuts” so much, but I was never going to include it, as like you said, it’s an instrumental album and not a hip-hop/rap album.

I was close to placing The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill in my list, but it just isn’t exactly a hip-hop album in my opinion. It would be like putting CrazySexyCool in their because of Left Eye’s contributions to Waterfalls, Kick Your Game, Switch & Sumthin’ Wicked Comes This Way.

I think this sentence sums it up best:

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is a neo soul and R&B album with some songs based in hip hop and reggae.

However, this is very little reggae compared to hip-hop on The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill! Only like “Forgive Them Father” and the bridge to “Lost Ones” touch on reggae lol

Yeah I feel you. TLC is a good point to cite as they certainly flirted with rap more than most straight R&B acts. Their first LP is pretty much new jack swing, which is a whole other can of worms genre taxonomy wise. I would say that to a certain degree Lauryn gets a pass in my book because she was associated with the scene and culture of hip-hop, and is still cited by rappers as a rapper, which I think counts for something.

So I've decided that I'm getting one female MC from VMP this month. Out of Brat/Eve ( I pretty much already know most people's opinion on EVE in here lol) I may swap for Lil Simz, Rico, or Ivy. I do plan on getting all at some point. Which of those is the most must have ?

I think the R&HH ROTM’s of Ivy Sole, Rico Nasty and Little Simz albums are all kinda equal to be honest in terms quality. Ivy Sole’s Overgrown is the most consistent in my opinion, but Rico Nasty and Little Simz standout moments on their albums are greater than Ivy Sole’s! All three albums are pretty great. None of them are amazing albums in my opinion, they’re kinda like a 7.5-7.6/10. Overall, they are all nice additions!!

I'm leaning Ivy, only because like you said they're all kind of equal in music quality, but I think Ivy has the nicest all around package. I've been waiting for a month where I don't like any records of the month and swap for all 3.

Get that Ivy Sole!! It has to be lowest stock AND it's the best looking pressing available out of those you mentioned!

I like Eve as well, I’m just not a fan of her debut album! I like her personality though too. She seems really gentle, chilled and funny!
I figured the lyric “You make me cum, I might flood the block/Wet up ya socks” alone would make you a fan :D

EDIT: Sorry, btw, if that crosses some sort of standard for quoting stuff in this forum. I'm not exactly sure what or if those standards exist. Anyway, I pulled the quote from Pitchfork, so I figured it was ok.

I thought somebody either on here or reddit said customer service told them there were 400 of each available for swaps next month and they weren't supposed to show up this month. I could be wrong though.

If Ready to Die and Gorillaz both become available for swaps I am seriously considering joining another track just for the sake of swapping for both.

I know I'm one of approximately three people who give a shit about this, but the Roots stencil this month is TERRIBLE. The punchouts-within-punchouts makes it's basically impossible to use! It's been an issue amongst a lot of the RHH stencils but my god is this one especially egregious
