I was listening to some records yesterday and noticed that there was a hum coming from the left channel and that the overall volume from the left channel was lower than the right. The hum dampened significantly if I touched any metal part on any of the connected equipment.

I was able to test my headphone amp and pre-amp and all the connecting audio cables and they all work fine, so, I'm pretty sure it's something on my U-Turn turntable. I'm thinking it's the wires that connect to the cartridge (I'm using a Grado Black, the newer version) but I haven't had time to remove and re-attach the wires. Could there be any other things I can check out on the turntable? Or is my instinct to remove and re-attach the wires to the cartridge the correct next step?

Sounds like a bad cartridge if you've tried everything else. Swap the green/red and white /blue wires and if the problem changes to the right channel, it's the cartridge. If it stays on the same channel, the cartridge is fine.

I've had this happen to me once, unfortunately with a rather expensive Dynavector.
 
I've been having the same problem since last weekend. I don't know what caused it because I didn't change or move anything. But I discovered that touching the headshell with something made of metal, the hum disappears. As I have zero money to buy a new cartridge, I'll stay with my DIY method :LOL:
