The Cure - all things big, small, and sticky sweet

Incoming:
“Probably in about six weeks time I’ll be able to say when everything’s coming out and what we’re doing next year and everything … We were doing two albums and one of them’s very, very doom and gloom and the other one isn’t,” he said. “And they’re both very close to being done. I just have to decide who’s going to mix them. That’s really all I’ve got left to do.”

I believe it’s been 6 weeks

WMS is good! I’ve been enjoying the RSD version. The thing for me is that the two albums that preceded it are some of my favorite music ever, and WMS is just not as consistent. I do wish Robert Smith had pursued that direction further, instead of the rougher textures of their 2000s work.

Edit: while I have @mcherry ’s attention… do you have (and if so, have an opinion on) the original Entreat and/or Entreat Plus on vinyl?
Ooo I missed this. I have Entreat Plus thanks to @Yer Ol' Uncle D but I can’t seem to find it now so I’m crying about this and Simon tonight

The Simon news are a huge bummer. I’ve been watching some of their live DVDs and since Porl’s departure it seems like he’s the only member with a remarkable stage presence. Not to mention his bass lines, which are EAD etial to the band’s sound.

The only tiny silver lining about these news is that it might mean the new album/tour are just around the corner. He probably just learned that Robert Smith screwed him over in regards to some credits or royalties or something like that, and he’s had enough.

Personally I’m going to have a hard time wanting to see them without Simon. At this point in their career, I’m not sure what Robert could have done. Maybe he can get Hook to fill in….
That seems like such a bad idea, with Peter hook's famous temperament. Sounds like when Rick rubin suggested ginger baker to drum for sabbath. "You need a guy? I found the most famously dickish one ever, see if that makes it work"

I was joking about Hook. 😁

This new Chvrches single is very Cure.

If you can hear this by muting the lead vocals in your mind‘s eye, the music is Disintegration/Wish era Cure.

They need to recruit lain Cook to play bass.

Are you guys familiar with the shallow rewards podcast? Several episodes dedicated to some individual cure albums by someone who is obviously a deep deep superfan, which I found great and mostly informative (and I admit the wild mood swings one where he shit talks the album is great)

because i didn't even look up the dude's name, i had no idea until i clicked through a link to his actual blog that the dude that does this podcast is ex-pitchfork writer and author of the 33 1/3 book on joy divison's "unknown pleasures", Chris Ott. (my comment on him being a cure superfan stands, and I think he himself would prob agree and perhaps expand on it in a more eloquent way)

I listened to the Bloodlfowers episode. I haven’t really done a deep dive on the inner workings of The Cure, I mostly listen to their music, but I’ve never listened to someone shit on an album for 40 minutes, call it a C+ at best and then say that Bloodflowers should be in every Cure fans collection….haha.

I’m about 15 minutes in the WMS episode and his claim that it’s in the top 5 of career killing albums ever is laughable. I’ll finish it, but I don’t really understand that dislike for this album.

oh no when it came out it was panned really hard -- i liked it then and honestly i like it now, but he's not wrong calling it a drastic departure from The Cure we have known and loved from 17 seconds onward.

I mean every Cure album sounds different to some extent. The guy is also shitting on The Top.

I've always found the top very uneven - a handful of really strong songs, but it isn't of a piece the way say pornography or kiss me are. His argument (and I don't know how valid it is since I was and am not huuuge into the siouxsie / the glove stuff) is that smith's time in the banshees helped him turn the cure into The Cure.

So I’ve decided to continue on with dudes Cure podcasts. Strictly for historical content and for a good laugh at all of the shitting on he does.
