And I can't wait for them to show up. The trifecta of 18 Wheels of Love, Steve McQueen, and Buttholeville is a great sequence of songs off of Gangstabilly. Seen them a bunch of times, but getting Steve McQueen at this show in 2008 made it one of the best.

Both times I saw them were post-American Band in Vancouver, at theaters right across the street from each other. At the first show they played Sign O The Times in the middle of Hell No I Ain't Happy to honour of Prince having passed a few months before, spoke highly in tribute to Canada's unofficial rock n' roll Poet Laureate, Gord Downie (of The Tragically Hip) and played an absolutely RIPPING version of Buttholeville! It was absolutely stellar.

It was also really a trip to not be one of the oldest folks at a show for a change, as the mean average age for the audience probably had 5-10 years on me! 🤣
 
So before I wound up falling way deep into DBT I was tangentially aware of them and loved the band name, but beyond their contribution to Uncut's Highway 61 Revisited Revisited CD I hadn't heard much of their stuff. This song's reference to them was probably one of the biggest pushes to get me digging into their catalogue (the album on which this song originally appears got many many spins at my home, work and on the road.)

 
I’ve seen them 12 times since 2006. One of my favorite bands of all time. The run from Southern Rock Opera to The Dirty South is up there with any band’s best few years.

Also, coming back to your talk of that trifecta, I couldn't agree more. I'd say it's my favourite 3-song run of their entire catalogue.

I had mentioned in a post on the April Challenge thread that The Unraveling features my favourite 3-song run since the early/mid-oughts, so between that and your post, I figured I'd actually figure what my favourite three 3-song runs are in the DBT catalogue because it's just the kind of procrastination I love. So without further ado:

18 Wheels of Love-->Steve McQueen-->Buttholeville
Sink Hole-->Hell No, I Ain't Happy-->Marry Me
Daddy's Cup-->Never Gonna Change-->Lookout Mountain

Naturally, I'd be curious to see what others think.

I feel like the Hood/Cooley songs are prone to frequent change, but album and Isbell remain steadily the same.

I am always late to my favorite bands. Didn’t find DBT till I heard Southeastern. Then promptly listened to all the albums Jason was on, then the rest. I bet I listened to Gangstabilly through English Oceans 50 (maybe) times in a week. I couldn’t stop! Love the songwriting, love the stories, love the rock, love all the different songwriters and players. First one and only show was at the Ryman when Jason came out for Heathens. Going to see Hood in Chicago soon.

Favorite Hood song: Heathens or Grand Canyon
Favorite Cooley song: Sounds Better In A Song or Self Destructive Zones
Favorite Isbell song: Never Gonna Change or Goddamn Lonely Love
Favorite Tucker Song: Purgatory Line

All of these are subject to change except Purgatory Line, really the only song she has with the band I like. The other ones are good but this one just blows me away.

Oo, I didn't know that comp existed! I saw that a couple of the DBT guys are on another Uncut Dylan comp this month that I'm trying to get my hands on, but I'll have to track down a copy of that, as well.

I’ve only seen them 8 times but three were during Isbells tenure. I agree that SRO->TDS is possibly one of the best three album streaks in the last 30 years

Seen them a bunch of times starting in the Isbell years on the Dirty South tour, and pretty much every tour since. Plus Patterson solo.

Favorites is gonna be tough, and is definitely subject to change. Going to have to think about the trifectas and get back on that one.

I read Stephen Deusners article about "Oh Death" (the song) in No Depression yesterday and the book was teased in his bio blurb under the piece.

Also, thanks to this thread i just saw that the truckers are headed for germany next summer. They play relatively small venues here, so that should be fun. I never saw them, only saw Isbell solo twice

I haven't seen Isbell yet. I have tickets for a show last year that got rescheduled to this July, but don't know yet whether that will happen (I'm skeptical) - but certainly hope to catch him when it becomes feasible again!
