Movies

Besides the pathetic lack of diversity here, what kind of self-centered boring people are they? The constant gravitation towards white cis-male stories is preventable now even while it takes the years for the demographics of the ranks to be corrected. People should stop treating cinema as an opportunity for male gazing, and more as Eberts "empathy machine." For me there's nothing more interesting than exploring someone else's POV, but I guess most Academy members would rather see theirs reinforced.
So much this.

For all the people bitching about De Niro not getting a nom for the Irishmen I'm like he's played that role 10 times already!! As a middle age white guy I'd much rather watch The Farewell or The Last Black Man in San Francisco or Parasite over Marriage Story, the Irishman, or Joker.

Might I point you towards the Independent Spirit Awards, in which all of these films are nominees and for the modest price of $95/year, you can be a member of the voting body?

Totally agree. And on that subject, The Last Black Man in San Fransisco was easily a top 3 film for me this year for me this year, and I was shocked it was totally snubbed for the most part, even on critics year-end lists.

I would really like to see this.

oh, this is amazing. Screeners?

It's on Prime Video in 4K HDR, if you have that. Didn't get a chance to see this in theaters sadly, but it still made a big impression on me at home.

Did not realize it was on Prime! Definitely gonna watch.

Alas, I am still using a 1080p Panny plasma, so 4K HDR is lost on me.

Ah those are still great though, always lusted after one before they went away!

I think almost all of the A24 films go to Prime now after having a little while to be rented on the digital storefronts, and unlike other studios / services Prime is putting them up in 4K HDR with good compression, which is really great to be able to see top rated films from 6 months ago in top quality for free.

I love my Panny and will probably not replace it until it fails. It's a good-lookin' screen. Not as unnaturally sharp and vibrant as an OLED, but has a nice, filmic image.

Oh my God, is The Lighthouse coming to Prime? I wanted to see that so badly.

I should really check Prime more often.

I use a 2017 OLED which I love, but there's something to be said for the relative ease of use of the old Panny Plasmas and 1080p SDR content. There's a boatload of frustrations I've had with how the 7 series OLED and Apple TV 4K handle Dolby Vision, HDR10, dimming, framerate etc. While there's certainly better quality stuff out there now, there's a mountain of techno crap to wade through to get there!

As for The Lighthouse, I would check back in a few months. Midsommar just hit Prime as well, and that came to digital markets in late November, so it seems like it's a 3 month out kind of deal.

I loved the Joker, I hope Phoenix wins best actor. As far as diversity I hope they make a similar Harley Quinn movie one day. A gritty slow decent into madness from a females perspective, How society can push a troubled woman seeking help into the arms of a dangerous man like the Joker. Ignored and abused by so called normal people she is eventually embraced by a psychopath .There’s a great movie in there somewhere.

Whoa. What a well-kept secret. Do they send the screeners throughout the year, or does everything come to you around awards season?
All at once around awards season. Typically, they've been received around mid-January, but this year, we got the digital screeners on Dec 21st because the awards are much sooner than usual. They make the disclaimer that nominees providing screeners is optional, but the participation has improved significantly since they introduced digital screeners to the mix.

De Niro (and everybody in the best actor category) was still better than Joaquin in Joker.

The best actor category this decade has been dominated with the theme of rewarding okay to mediocre performances as a career win. Like an apology for ignoring their much better performances. That theme will probably continue this year.

Just for fun say they made a movie about the Joker where he uses a nerve gas (Or something) that takes his personality into whatever host is nearby and breathes it in. Which actors or actresses would you like to see take on that roll? Young, old, male, female any race goes. Who do you think would do a good job or who would you like to see play such an unhinged roll . I’d love to see some series actors play totally against type .

Obvious answer: Nic Cage

I just remembered that Green Book won BP last year, so who the hell knows what's gonna happen this time

Look, I'm not upset or outraged about the Oscars. I just like the conversations around them. Every year there's some odd choices and it's fun to talk about.

Little Women feels like a solid winner, but when I go back and look at what's won in the recent past, it's all over the place. Hey, remember Argo? Hey, it's an okay film, but nowhere near the best of that year. It's not even talked about anymore.

At least it's not poor Crash, whose reputation is eternally ruined by winning best picture.
